breath test administered at roadside for DUI is considered a field sobriety test in San Diego and is voluntary for drivers 21 of age and older. It is often confused with the mandatory chemical breath test a driver must consent to once arrested and taken into custody for drunk driving.
When a PAS, or Preliminary Alcohol Screening test is administered at roadside, the driver is required to blow into a small hand held breath testing device. A PAS test is widely reputed to give inaccurately high and unreliable BAC readings.
