The San Diego Designated Drivers Association, founded by Raymond Gross , will provide a safe ride home for you in your own vehicle. The DDASD Volunteers work in pairs of two, with one volunteer driving you home in his or her vehicle, and the other volunteer following you in your car, or what they dub a "chase" car.
The purpose of the service is to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel while impaired, and a condition of services is that the rider, or transportee, actually have a vehicle in their possession but opt not to drive as a safety measure. If you call the DDASD for a ride home, you MUST have a vehicle at your disposal, or they will not provide a ride for you.
The service is point to point, making one stop to pick up the passenger(s) and another to arrive at the planned destination, or drop off point.
The DDASD's hours of service are 10pm to 2am on Friday, Saturday, and select holidays. If you intend to use the free service, you must call in before 2 am or they will not be able to accommodate you.
Reservations are not accepted, and passenger pick up zones are limited to Poway and La Mesa.
The first 15 miles are free, for longer rides a $20 donation is asked for, and $40 for trips over 25 miles. The volunteers DO accept tips.

Designated Driver programs provide transportation for persons who plan to drink, and typically promote the concept of designating a driver to commit to remaining sober and assuming the responsibility of getting others home safely.
